Thousands of Ukrainian nationals celebrated their 31st Independence Day far away from home in Warsaw, Poland on 24 August, 2022. The mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski spoke to the crowd of thousands welcoming them in Ukrainian. Trzaskowski told the crowd Ukrainians are shedding their blood for European freedom and that he is certain Ukraine will join the European Union. Many in the crowd carried signs with slogans with the words "Russia is a terrorist state". On the day same day in Ukraine a Russian missile struck a train station in the Eastern part of the country killing nearly two dozen people and injuring more than 50.
