Poland Hints at German Contribution to Rebuilding of Palace Destroyed during WWII

Remains of the Saxon Palace destroyed by the Nazis in 1944 are seen uncovered on Pilsudski Square in Warsaw, Poland on 10 September, 2022., 2022. A controversial plan to rebuild the Saxon Palace by the current government is being undertaken costing the state well over 500 thousand Euros despite initial estimates concluding costs would amount to no more than 75 million Euros. Warsaw city authorities oppose the reconstruction of the palace in part due to imposed costs and also because it would take away the significance of the Tomb of the Unknown soldier which is now housed in the last remaining part of the former Saxon Palace on the square. A deputy minister of culture during an interview on Polish radio hinted at Germany having to contribute to the reconstruction because of its destruction by the Nazi regime during the Second World War.
