After 3 years of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, the biggest Carnival of the whole Switzerland took place again in Basel. From February 27th to March 1st, 2023, the streets of the city will be flooded by Cliques dressed up with their new every-year brand costumes and masks, Güggenmusik performing songs, and handmade decorated Wagons from which sweets and confetti are thrown at the crowd. The event kick off was the traditional Morgestraich on Monday at 4am, when the whole city turns off its artificial lights and handmade lanterns are paraded through the streets. The Basel Carnival, which is rooted in the city's identity since before the 12th century, has become an intangible UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
