Activist and representative of the transgender community Arzoo Khan (L) and co-founder of an organization representing transgender community Farzana Jan (R) attend a press conference in Peshawar, Pakistan, 24 May 2023. The Federal Shariat Court has ruled against a law which was designed to protect the rights of transgender people, as it deemed some of its provisions to be contrary to Islamic injunctions. After hearing arguments from both parties, the court concluded that the concept of gender identity based on self-perceived identity, rather than biological sex, was against Islamic teachings.
