Participants are seen engaging in sword fights as a part of dedication and reenactment of the battle of Karbala during 10th day of muhharum observation in Kolkata , India , on 29 July 2023 . Ashura is an important Islamic day which falls on the 10th day of month of Muharram , the first month of Islamic lunar calendar. Ashura marks the death of Husayn ibn Ali , the grandson of prophet Muhammad in the battle of Karbala. The day is observed as the end of 10 days of mourning .
