Shia Muslims take part in a procession on the 8th day of Muharram in Srinagar After a ban of 34 years, Muharram processions were allowed to pass through a traditional route in Srinagar by the authorities. The 8th and 10th Muharram processions were banned in 1989 after the eruption of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. Shia Muslims commemorate Muharram as a month of mourning in remembrance of the Martyrdom of Islamic Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussain, who was Martyred on Ashura (10th day of Muharram) in the battle of Karbala in 680 A.D.
