A drone view of the Forte Spagnolo (Spanish fortress; locally called Il Castello) at sunrise, in L'Aquila, Italy, on September 9, 2023. The Forte Spagnolo is a Renaissance castle in L'Aquila, central Italy. The Fort was constructed in the first half of the 16th century as part of an expansive military endeavor during Spain's rule in southern Italy. However, it never served in any military conflict. In the 17th century, it was the residence of the Spanish governor. Later, it housed French troops in the early 19th century and German forces during WWII.
