Supporters of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) political party are blocking the road as they gather to protest alleged rigging in the general elections in Peshawar, Pakistan, on February 12, 2024. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is concluding its count of votes from the recent general elections. Candidates supported by jailed former prime minister and main opposition leader, Imran Khan, are emerging as the largest group, but without an outright majority to form the government. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), or PML-N, led by three-time prime minister and Khan’s main rival, Nawaz Sharif, is emerging as the second largest party with 75 seats. This is followed by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari with 54 seats. Smaller parties, such as the Muhajir Qaumi Movement with 17 elected candidates, are accounting for the remaining seats in the National Assembly, or the Parliament.
