(FILE VIDEO) Every year in Venice, on March 25th, the anniversary of the city's founding is celebrated, which occurred in 421 AD. The date symbolizes the laying of the city's first stone, a day when, according to the chronicles of the time, two Patavine consuls declared the birth of Venice and from there the construction of the church of San Giacomo a Rivus Altus (the current Rialto) would begin. The day was rich in symbolic meanings both because it coincided with the Annunciation, and because, at the time, the year began in March, with the arrival of spring, and so March 25th became the Venetian New Year. History of Venice is very ancient, with the earliest settlements dating back to the 5th century, a period when mainland populations fled to the lagoon to escape the raids of the barbarians (who, being horse-mounted, couldn't reach the islands). Video shows views of iconic landmarks of Venice during february 2024.
