AstraZeneca has initiated the global withdrawal of its Covid-19 vaccine, citing a "surplus of available updated vaccines" targeting newer variants. The decision follows the company's voluntary withdrawal of its EU marketing authorization in March. On May 7, the European Medicines Agency announced that the vaccine is no longer authorized for use in the EU.
