Full Sturgeon Supermoon Occurring On August 19th, 2024

(FILE VIDEO) On August 19th, 2024, people around the world can see the "Strugeon" Supermoon. The Full Sturgeon Moon is a traditional name given to the full moon in August by Native American tribes. It was named after the sturgeon fish, which were most readily caught during this month in the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, called perigee. This makes the moon appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is at its farthest point, or apogee. On August 19, 2024, the full moon will be at a distance that qualifies it as a supermoon, making it a particularly impressive sight. This full moon will also be a "Blue Moon": a seasonal Blue Moon is the traditional definition of a Blue Moon and refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons according to NASA.
