On Saturday, March 15, 2025, a tragic bombing outside a mosque in Peshawar's Urmar area is resulting in the death of prominent religious scholar Mufti Munir Shakir and injuries to three others. The explosion is occurring as Mufti Shakir is entering the mosque for Asr prayers. He is immediately transported to Lady Reading Hospital but succumbs to his injuries during surgery. Mufti Munir Shakir is the founder of the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Islam, established in December 2004, and is known for his outspoken advocacy for Pashtun nationalism and criticism of certain state policies.
