People walk on a boardwalk in a flooded St. Mark's Square (Venice)

Nov 16th 2019. People walk on a boardwalk put in place in a flooded St. Mark's Square due to the exceptional high tide which reached almost unprecedented levels, and heavily affected the city throughout the week. The week of 11th - 17th November 2019 was one of the worst in Venice's history. During this week, in fact, the city was flooded 3 times, with tide peaks (acqua alta) reaching almost unprecedented levels. The sea level rise, the city slow sinking and the industrial canals dug in the past are among the main causes. The automated bulkhead system built in the last decades to protect Venice from the high tide (the so-called "MOSE"), did not work. Two people lost their lives, and damages to shops and 1st floor apartments have been substantial.
