Huntsman spiders do clean their legs through a behaviour known as strigulation. In this process, they rub their legs together, producing a hissing sound. This action helps them remove dirt, dust, and other debris from the legs, which have hairs and spines that can trap particles. A large Huntsman spider (Heteropoda venatoria) sits on a wall at night, cleaning its legs with its mouth, known as strigulation in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on April 23, 2025.
