Polish government puts independent judiciary under pressure

Protesters and counter-protesters can be heard shouting during a demonstration in front of the Supreme Court in Warsaw, Poland on December 23, 21019 against the sudden suspension of Pawel Juszczyszyn. Juszczyszyn is a judge from Olsztyn in northern Poland abruptly suspended after criticizing the appointment of another judge by the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) which oversees complaints against the judiciary and is largely under political control by the current, Eurosceptic Law and Justice party. The Polish government has been heavily criticised by the EU endangering the independence of the judiciary and despite a repeated call to action by protesters the EU has apprehensive in taking strong measure against Poland.
