Hawk Newsome, founder of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, speaks at an immigrant rights’ rally at Foley Square in New York City to demand justice for Eric Diaz and Gaspar Avendano-Hernandez following a violent altercation between Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and the family just two days prior. During the attempted arrest of Avendano-Hernandez, a plain-clothed ICE agent reportedly shot 26-year-old Eric Diaz in the face as ICE was trying to arrest his mother’s boyfriend, Gaspar Avendano-Hernandez. The officers reportedly failed to show proper documentation, including a warrant or badges. Avendano-Hernandez was taken from Maimonides Medical Center and is being detained.
