Rato Machhindranath Festival


Official displays the bejeweled vest known as "Bhoto" to the public from the chariot of Rato Machhindranath in present of Nepali President Bidaya Devi Bhandai, Nepal’s caretaker Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, other ministers and high ranked officials during Bhoto Jatra festival in Jawalakhel on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal on May 25, 2017. According to the Hindu legend, Rato Machhindranath is a Hindu god, who was brought from Assam in India by a farmer to the Kathmandu valley in Nepal to prevent a drought during the rice season. The month-long festival begins with the construction of the chariot in Pulchowk and ends with the Bhoto Jatra festival in Jawalakhel of Patan. It is celebrated by Buddhists and Hindus of Newar community by carrying the chariot to different places in the town of Patan in hope for good rain and prosperity.
