Devotees praying at a Ganges riverside in Kolkata on the day of Mahalaya. Mahalaya marks the day of start of Devi Pakha from Pitri pakha, the official start to Durga puja. On this day , Hindus pay homage to their ancestors . Mahalaya is celebrated in second fortnight of Hindu Lunar month in September. Devotees rush to river Ganges to pray and offer respect to their ancestors. This year the prayer were restricted due to COVID-19 outbreak, yet citizens of Kolkata paid respect to their ancestors since morning , following protocols as much as they can.
