Algeria celebrates the movement's second anniversary on February 22, 2021 of mass protest, known as the Hirak which led to the resignation of then President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Current Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebbounne announced on February 18 the pardon and release of some sixty people convicted or awaiting trial on charges related to their participation in the Hirak protest movement. He also said he was dissolving the lower house of parliament which members had also served under former President Bouteflika, paving the way for early parliamentary elections later this year and a cabinet reshuffle.
