Verification underway of 2,500 rhino horns seized from poachers in India

Expert from the Rhino Horn Verification Committee holds a rhino horn that was verified with the help of officials of the Directorate of Forensic Science in Nagaon District of Assam , India on August 31,2021. The process of verification conducted by a 12-member committee has identified around 2,500 rhino horns stored in state treasuries in Assam.verification of rhino horns stored in Kamrup, Barpeta and Morigaon districts have been completed while it is underway in Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat and other treasuries. Rhino horns are used in traditional medicine in countries such as China and Vietnam. Their high value has been blamed among one of the reasons for rampant killing of rhinos. Assam is home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos.
